SJM Dental College and Hospital is an offspring of SJM Vidyapeetha ®, a registered society. It was started by Sri Mallikarjuna Murugharajendra Mahaswamiji in 1966 to take the education to the thresholds of people in the backward district of Chitradurga in Karnataka. It was a positive response to Govt. of India then, for their plea to the philanthropic institutions to take initiative to start educational institutions to support the Government’s mission to universalize education. Sri Manmaharaja Jagadguru Mallikarjuna Maha Swamiji was the pontiff of Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga that time. It inherits the culture of Sharanas of 12th Century A.D., Karnataka.
It was the time, when socio, economic and cultural revolution took place to create an egalitarian society to ensure liberty, equality and fraternity to all. The Sharanas then, established a forum of all, representing people from across the country, called the Anubhava Mantap. It is an unique one in the history of the globe and mankind. The historians consider this as the first parliament akin to the modern one in the present democratic system.
SJM Vidyapeetha was started with this global vision and mission in chitradurga. Chitradurga is located in the central part of Karnataka with proper road and railway links on NH-4 and NH-13. It is a fort and caves city of pre-historic and tourism value.SJM Vidyapeetha now has about one hundred institutions, which include Medical, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, Engineering, Polytechnic, Degree and PU Colleges , Schools and Hostels. As a first institution of health sciences, SJM Dental College & Hospital was started in 1986, with a vision to add proven dentists to serve in the health care sector. It was the time, when the country was facing acute need of dentists.
The SJM Dental College & Hospital is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka and approved by Central Government, State Government and Dental Council of India. Course offered is BDS & MDS and the curriculum is as per the university norms. All formalities needed to start are completed. The college is accredited by NAAC with ‘B’ Grade. The Academic committee of the college, under the guidance of IQAC, Prepares academic calendar adding more and more add on programs to enrich the teaching, learning and practicing activities. These programs include skill development and professional development traits.
SJM Dental College & Hospital every year takes measures to strengthen the students support and progress system, which includes financial help at the time of admission and while paying annual fees. Hostel fees concessions are also assured to merit students and economically weaker students. Besides the Government Scholarships, merit students get cash Prizes.
Students are trained for the conduct of confident practice through class room teaching, laboratory works, clinical practice in Hospital and community outreach experiences through extension activities. Regularly conduct workshops, seminars, group discussions, table clinic competition, Poster Presentation competition including e-poster presentation competition to imbibe the knowledge and skill to take up the dental practice with confidence. Dental Health care entrepreneurship development programmes are conducted to promote the self-employment bent of mind in students. Institution has made provision to promote research interest in faculty and students by encouraging them with good infrastructure and incentives. Career planning and advancement programmes are the routine part of academic calendar every year.
The fact that the destiny of the country is built in a class room, is a motivation to faculty and management to plan and execute faculty development and students progression programmes. Information communication technology (ICT) is brought into classroom in the form of smart classes and e-office and administration. The faculty are trained in the conduct of various academic and community supportive programmes. They are encouraged to take up research projects and extension services through infrastructure and incentives of financial and non financial nature. They are encouraged to participate in national and international conferences relating to dental education and practice and publish research papers and text books.
The added attractions for prospective and present dental students in the institutions are lush green campus, clean and hygienic hostel, community interactive programmes, penetrated sports, cultural and social service activities. ICT in the teaching, learning and evaluation activities, besides the extension visit to popular apex institutions and dental hospitals across the Country, are the few to mention.
The college has created research supportive environment on the campus. The Research committee under the chairmanship of the Principal Dr. r.Gowramma take care of planning and execution of research activities in the college. These include, the conduct of workshops on research methodology, event based field visit to observe and collect data about the event, analysis in the labs, deliberation at the seminar halls, publication of papers, awarding the best performers are the programmes in the college. During internship training also, the students are largely encouraged in research activities.
The internship training is mandatory as per the norms of apex authorities like RGUHS and DCI. The college has all the facilities for this, and whenever possible, students and faculty are deputed to Basaveshwara Medical College Hospital, which is a sister concern of SJM Vidyapeetha ‘MOU’s are also made with the local dental practitioners and District Govt. Hospital Chitradurga, and Sri Raghavendra Ayurvedic Medical College, Malladihally, Rotary Clubs etc.,
The college has a personality development and placement cell. Hither to, these activities were not taken seriously. But now after the NAAC accreditation, the institution conducts various programmes on in skill development and career planning. External companies are not invited so for and the college has planned to do it in the coming academic year.
The Co-Curricular activities include sports and games, cultural Practices and demonstrations, Yoga and meditational Practices, aerobics and leadership training, presentation of skills and short dramas on the campus and outside, Preparing students for University, State and National level Competitions are the Co-Curricular activities regularly conducted. Dental Camps are conducted regularly at Mass Marriage Programms of Sri Murugha Math, Chitradurga, on every 5th of the Monthly where in more than 15,000 people take part. Camps are conducted in selected Schools and institutions, including for inmates in the District Jail and physically and mentally disabled children.
SJM Dental College & Hospital has the vision of training the globally excellent dentist with a proven commitment to take the dental health care to the thresholds of common folk. It endeavors to create right infrastructure for the right training by crating avenues for fullest utilization of information communication technology, Innovative ideas and deeds, with regard to classroom teaching, clinical practice, research and development.
